What to buy?

A Slingshot (in Afrikaans a REKKER, nickname: KETTIE) is as random and unique as any sports equipment. If you are starting out on your kettie shooting competition career – the option would be a good GUS (general utility slingshot) kettie; you can’t have enough of them.

Slingshot Technical specs:

The Kettie Frame:

  • “pinch-grip” frame
  • OTT
  • a fork (or “bow” in some countries) width of 80-90 mm, measured from the outside
    corners.
  • a fork equipped with a “clips” system (to attach the bands)
  • natural latex (sling-shot-specific) flat bands
  • a generous, larger pouch with a plain design. Reasonable quality and durability are
    important for safety.
  • Do not buy a kettie with “tubes” for this purpose, but only ketties equipped with “flat
    bands”.

The Kettie Flat Bands:

  • The “rubber” bands are usually latex-based, synthetic and the preferred competition grade is natural latex.
  • There is no restrictions on band size, but in practice the following are used in competition shooting: Kids: 0.45 mm, weak draw (ladies) 0.50 mm, adult (open) 0.55 – and 0.60 Field target.
  • Make sure you buy elastic band products intended for kettie shooting; products for other purposes, like physical exercise, will not work.
  • A few great brands are available worldwide, including the top South African brand, Ketty Elite Pro. The Ketty Elite Pro products are all custom-made by hand and specifically designed for kettie sport shooting, available in 0,45 mm (Yellow) for novices/children, 0,50 mm and 0,55 mm for adults, and 0,60 mm for field target.

Slingshot Pellets (Ammo):

  • Steel pellets: 8 mm steel balls (so-called “ball bearings”). SASF standardized compatition size: 8 mm – mass -30 gr – 35 gr. These are great for repetitive use and – a must-have for standard discipline practice.
  • Carbon steel is best; do not buy anything coated or plated.
  • Lead balls are not permitted, as they are poisonous to you and the environment.
  • Good ammo is important and critical for good “Precision and Accuracy matrix” (PAM) results.
  • Poor ammo discouraging because of poor results and reinforces bad shooting habits!

  • Clay pellets: Safety/field target clay balls (pellets) in size 8 mm+ > 9 mm.
  • Proper kettie clay ammo pellets – properties: (1) Heavy for the gauge (heavy to size), (2) magnetic (can be picked-up with a magnet), (3) eco-friendly, and- (4) water soluble.
  • There are a variety of options on offer – from imitation terracotta (which is too small, too light) – to actual real kettie ammo pellets.

Become a member in a local slingshot club – or start your own club.

The SASF model for athlete participations in – the Sport of Slingshot shooting -is based on athlete accessibility and convenience. The one major advantageous of slingshot shooting is the convenience of basic facilities, unlike other sports that require expensive infrastructure.

SASF supports the development of larger well equipped clubs with training facilities and coaches, but, the (A) “Forkers” (sling shooting athletes) lifestyle preferences – and (B) the  basic (limited) infrastructure and facilities requirement presages the physical requirements of actual clubs. Basic rules summary

This page provides a quick revision and reference of the SASF Competition and Auxiliary rules. Match shooting is about understanding the critical details of the rules.

Cheating in match play is a summarily DQ from the tournament.

Cheating in match play carries the possibility of a LIFE BAN from SASF.

Kettie (Slingshot) - The SASF rules prescribe:

  • The kettie frame (and fixed accessories) may not exceed (“should fit into”) a 200 mm square.
  • The kettie may not have an arm brace or support, only a lanyard cord.
  • The kettie pouch may not have moulded (recessed/sculpted) pellet seating impressions; no limitations on size or materials like leather, natural or artificial fibres; usually 45-55 mm long, 1,5-2 mm thick, in a variety of designs.
  • The kettie may not have a laser sight or an edged magnification lens, but mechanical and fibre-optic-enhanced sights are fine.
  • There are no limitations on weight (mass), the materials of the kettie frame, or combinations, e.g. wood, polymers (plastics), resins, carbon, metals and alloys like stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, etc.
  • There are no limitations on elastic bands but note that “flat bands” from 0,45-0,6 mm are preferable for precision shooting.
  • There are no limitations on the draw length (the pull length/strength of the bands); short draw (most prevalent in SA), semi-butterfly and butterfly (long draw) are permitted, but with no mechanical trigger release.
  • There are no limitations on band affixing with tape, stretch bands (Amber Belt), clips and hinges for TTF (through the forks), and the most predominant, OTT (over the top), is allowed.
  • There are no limitations on shooting style, kettie orientation – 180º (upright/classic), 45º or 90º (gangster style), or the grip, hammer, pinch thumb, etc.
  • SAFS “ammo” (pellets). Standardization: # 8 mm steel (indoor competition), # 8-10 mm “safety pellets”. Eco-friendly, magnetic clay, water-soluble for outdoor/field target.
  • In practical terms, it is advised that 8mm steel pellets – between 30gr and 35gr must be propelled (velocity) must be propelled (velocity) faster than (or a minimum) of 200 fs (feet per second) and generate in excess of 2 fp/e (2 foot pounds energy – to knock down targets).

Targets - The SASF rules prescribe:

  • SAFS sport code – provincial and national league – standard indoor discipline target to be set at – a height of 1,4m, to be shot at the standard discipline distances 10m, 15m, 20m.
  • The targets is set and certified at minimum guideline of 1 pound and a hard range of a maximum of 2 pounds of push force in the centre of the target.
  • Targets must be in a stack configuration, 2 lines of 5 targets in sizes – from left to right, 8 cm, 7cm, 6cm, 5cm, 4cm in diameter, white target faces, protruding from a black frame mounting.

  • The target must be clearly in the knocked down position – to be counted (scored) period. There is no appeal for hits, pings or nicks etc.
  • Pre-competition, warm-up shots may only be fired on the dedicated demarcated range for the specific event.
  • The shooting squad of athletes – may not step up to the shooting line without an umpire present and the call (instruction) from the umpire to do so.
  • An athlete on the shooting line may not disrupt or disturb the preparation or shooting activities of the other athletes, unless there is a clear and present safety issue.
  • Supporter and couch must be behind the respective lines.
  • An athlete may be penalised if his coach is audible to other athletes.
  • An athlete may be penalised if his supporters disturb other athletes.
  • On the shooting line, a kettie my not be drawn and mounted and aimed downrange or at any target.
  • Kettie bands may be warmed up at below chest height, with no pellets in the pouch or hands, only pointing down range.
  • No drawn kettie will be pointed at any person or animal at any time anywhere at the venue.

Safety - The SASF rules prescribe:

  • Safety is every athlete’s responsibility. Any athlete or team members may at any time raise safety concerns.
  • Safety glasses are required on the range, the active athletes and all personnel on or at the shooting line. It is a VERY GOOD idea to use safety glasses by default whenever shooting a kettie.

  • Camouflage clothing is allowed at outdoor – Non-SASF National League Field Target events.
  • Only closed shoes, enclosing the heel and foot, with a non-slip sole is allowed, no beach sandals (flip-flops) or bare feet is allowed.

Match Play

SASF National League has three SASF standard (sports code) indoor disciplines but only one standard target set consisting of two rows of round targets with five targets each (top and bottom are the same), ranging in size from 8 cm to 4 cm. The athlete must knock-down the targets.

These targets are placed in front of the shooting range (indoor hall), each demarcating a range from 1 to 10 at a height of 1,4 m, and the shooting positions (stations) are placed and moved for distances of 10 m to 15 m and 20 m disciplines after the match squad completed the rotation. The match duration is 5 minutes and 10 shots, with no specific sequence (order) in which the targets must be eliminated (knocked down). Each target has a unique score value of 8 cm (2 points) to the smallest of 4 cm (10 points), keeping the match play interesting.

Each discipline (distance) is shot twice – as the athlete squad rotation. SASF National League classes: u/13 y (10/15 m), u/16, u/18 u/21, Open, Masters 50-60, Veterans 60+ and unisex (no distinction between sexes).

In South Africa, the SAFS Junior Series – is facilitated by “Die Voortrekkers Kettie Series”, NATSHOOT YOUNG GUNS KETTIE Series, The KETTY Series (primary schools), Game & Hunt magazine (Family) Series, all accommodating the novice Forker members (8 to 12 years old) at 5 m -10m distance, but, does not form part of the SASF national league – rankings for SA National Colours.

It is important to note that at a kettie tournament in South Africa, each discipline (10 m distance) and the related classes (u/13) are separate medals competition events. Therefore, you may, for example, specialize in 10 m and only enter 10 m events and be the SA 10 m champion. The format is very accommodating – you may have a handicap, such as a visual or physical impairment, preventing you from drawing for disciplines at longer distances, or you simply enjoy the simplicity of the event.

Match play strategy

People do not plan to fail – they fail to plan. Every organized sports (code) discipline – from tennis, swimming, football, rugby and darts to ring ball – has set match play strategies and creative plans (tactics) to outwit the opponents. This is usually based on “using your disadvantages to your advantage”. This inevitably implies that you need to understand your capabilities and hone your skill set accordingly.

Interestingly, it seems that technology (equipment) will give you a shorter development time for accuracy, and the scientific knowledge will ensure the top-end precision performance you need for podium positions. However, the bulk of the success, and thus the work to be a contender, resides in experience. Exercise and practice smartly to meet specific goals.

Just shooting kettie is like just playing “ball” aimlessly for entertainment. Which “ball” (football?), what are the rules and what is the measure of performance?

Welcome to the SASF Sport of Kettie (Slingshot) Shooting!

The SASF National League – is a ranking system – for SASF National Honours / Protea Team Colours

To be annually eligible for consideration an Athlete must submit 5 (five) scores from official SASF Sanctioned National League events. These events are – either participating in 5 (five) or more different Provincial Open Events, OR – at least 3 (three) Provincial Open Events – AND – the National Championships, (score counts for 2 (two)).

See: Membership requirements. A member wanting to participate in the SASF national ranking, must – (A) comply with the general membership requirements, (member in a club, etc) – and (B) notify and register (including the subsidy payments) with SASF no later than – before the start of the 3rd event of the year.

Provincial League and Championships:

Each province is encouraged to host 4 provincial events annually. Three (3) events (competitions) is closed and only for the athletes residing in that particular province. One (1) event is an OPEN Provincial event – open to any athlete in South Africa. The OPEN Provincial events – also serve as the Provincial Championship and the – official endorsed and officiated SASF National League events.

Provincial rankings: Usually a Provincial ranking is based on 3 (three) scores (from the 4 (four) provincial events) – which provides basis for Provincial Colours. This is also the ranking list for members nominated to the SA Championships if and when a quota is required due to SA Championship limited slots.

National Championships:

Entries to the National Championships are not dependent on the SASF National League rankings – or any other pre-qualification. In essence it is an open event to all affiliated SASF members. However the limited athlete slots are allocated to Provinces, if they cannot fill the quota, the quota is reallocated to other provinces. Example if the SA Championships is a 1 day event, and only 90 athletes can be accommodated – 10 slots to each province is apportioned, and those 10 slots are firstly offered to the ranked provincial members. Note: Die Voortrekkers has by default 36 slots U/13 > seniors.

Provincial Administration:

SASF encourages Provincial Slingshot Associations to follow the suggestions above, however – they have reasonable autonomy and sovereignty to structure and manage their own affairs.

Sponsored Series Events

We which to thank our generous sponsors for making it possible to host these training and development series events.

See: SASF National League – the ranking system – for SASF National Honours / Protea Team Colours, based on – SASF endorsed and officiated – Provincial Open Events (competitions).

Learn more about –  SASF  National League Visit Tab

At these “OPEN” Provincial Events – SASF host simultaneously on behalf of – our Kettie (Slingshot) development programme sponsors, as part of the events (competition) a variety of so-called “series”.

Series: The SASF events also include the various SERIES events that are hosted simultaneously:

NATSHOOT – Young Guns – Kettie Series – children (including U/13)  (includes 5 meter events)

Die Voortrekkers – aimed at Die Voortrekker members from U/8 to U13 / and open. (includes 5 meter events).

KETTY SERIES – aimed at primary and high school children.

Wild en Jag (Game and Hunt) – magazine series, aimed at the family context involvement.

How it practically works

Before the official – SASF Standard classes < U/13 10m 10, 15, – 20m events begin, – there is a special pre-event session where a special 5 (five) meter DOMESTIC (not international affiliated) event takes place to accommodate all the Pee-Wee’s from U/8 to U/13. Under 12/ and under U/13 also shoots Standard 10m discipline if they so which to.

Note that some elements of the SERIES continues into and simultaneously with the official event, such as the KETTY Series, Primary and High Schools, Die Voortrekkers with adult participants, Wild en Jag with parents competing in 10, 15 and even 20 meters.

How do I enter – for the various series?

You simply enter for the SASF – Open Provincial, in the relevant classes. There is no additional entry fees. You will be automatically entered into all the relevant series, and qualify for awards (medals) and rewards (prizes).

Awards and Prizes

SASF is an Amateur Organized Sports Administration body; we are not a commercial franchise.

SASF is a AWARDS (medals) rich environment because we have a strong development focus and program and of cause we technically have (development) classes from U/8 to U/12 domestic league – and SASF National League – U/13, U/16, U/18,  U/21, OPEN, <50 Masters, > 60 Veterans in every standard discipline, 10m, 15m, and 20m.

Other World /Countries Slingshot organizations, would for example only have 2 or 3 classes – and practically not cater for U/13, – perhaps just U/18 and Over 18 > SASF find it very limiting for Kettie shooting development.

Every standard discipline, 10m, 15m, and 20m, is a medals match on its own – and in every class – U/13, U/16, U/18,  U/21, OPEN, <50 Masters, > 60 Veterans. Thus athletes can compete for example just in 10m – or 15m, or 20m. Of Cause championships are determined by overall combined scores “High Gun” (over all winners).

Of Cause there are all the medals from the Sponsored Series.
